Photogrammetry
Even though photogrammetry is not a new concept (the term was first used already in 19th century), in present times it's been rediscovered and widely adopted in 3D modelling industry. A general idea for creating a 3D photogrammetric scan is simple - it requires taking multiple photos of the modelled object from many perspectives, preferably from every side. Then, photographs are imported into a specialized software that creates a digital 3D reproduction of the object. As a final step, a texture is created from the images, so the resulting 3D model not only has a shape of the original object, but also its color and all the characteristic elements (inscriptions, scratches, rust, patterns etc.)
A finished 3D model can then be printed on a 3D printer. This process takes days - the biggest of my prints take more than a week to print! After printing, wrecks are hand-painted to ensure their uniqueness and highlight their beauty.
